If any of you are interested in how
the boat was built, then I highly recommend checking out my father's blog catbuild.wordpress.com. This is also a great resource if you despise my laid back
writing style, but still want to read about Epic's Adventures (my dad will be posting updates as well, although I’m
unsure of how frequent).
Background
Sometime around Christmas 2008 my dad
was given the green light from my mom to buy a kit (think model toy set but on
a huge scale!) from Schionning, an Australian catamaran design company. The kit
arrived in May 2009 and my parents found a place to build the boat along the
Duwamish River at Delta Marine, a company that specializes in building
mega-yachts. Since then, my dad has been hard at work assembling his masterpiece.
Seeing the boat in the water and being
able to sail it is truly amazing. A thought that I often wonder and I know many
of you wonder as well is, "How in the world did he build
that?" My dad had never really built anything very substantial. So
something of this magnitude is mind boggling. I remember for a couple years my
dad would get home from work, eat dinner, then head out the door to work on his
boat for a few hours each evening. Once he retired he would work almost every day
and come home around dinner time. The amount of dedication, research, hard
work, and persistence that went into this is more than I can even imagine.
Plus, the pressure on him to make a
great finished product was huge; not only monetarily, but also just for pride's
sake. When told about the project he was taking on, most people likely thought
he was nuts. Shoot, I thought he was nuts. But everyone's leeriness may have
fueled motivation. There were times in which the building process did not go
well and morale was low. But my dad always kept moving forward and was able to
complete Epic more or less on schedule. For that I'm immensely proud and
am so excited for the chance to share the first leg of the adventure with him
and my mom.
